BMEG5730: Medical Devices and Sensor Networks

Course Coordinator, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2026

Course Outline

In this course, we will first discuss about the origins of physiological signals and principles for physiological measurements and the mechanisms of various bioelectrical, biochemical, biophysical, and bio-photonic sensors. After that, we will mainly focus on discussing biosensors, medical instruments, and devices for healthcare. Our discussions will cover the follow aspects, including: (i) principles and applications of electrodes, sensors, and body sensor networks; (ii) various flexible & wearable sensors, mobile sensors, and optical sensors and their applications for healthcare; and (iii) medical instruments and devices including pacemakers & defibrillators, blood measuring devices, SpO2 measurement, drug delivery system, cochlear implants, etc.
